Welcome To Fremont Street Nursery
Fremont Street Nursery provides quality day care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. We are licensed to care for 84 children and have a dedicated staff of 16. The children are provided three nutritional meals that are USDA approved which include breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.
Summer care is available and we take field trips to local facilities that provide us with educational and recreational opportunities.
Fremont Street Nursery was established in 1943 as the Negro Day Nursery with 100% African American children. Our services allowed parents to work outside of the home knowing their children were in a safe, loving and educational environment. It opened in the home of Mrs. Sue Finley on Pall Mall Street and has continued to operate for 70 years, making it the oldest licensed child-care facility in the City of Winchester.
Fremont Street Nursery moved to its present site at 533 Fremont Street in 1955. In just five years, the mortgage from F&M Bank for $23,842 was paid off thanks to generous gifts from the community. At this time, children aged 3 to 12 attended the nursery.
Because of the great need in the community to provide quality child care to younger children, the Board of Directors began a fundraising campaign in 2002 to expand. Events such as yard sales and chicken dinners were held. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, churches, business and civic organizations in Winchester and surrounding communities, this became a reality. In October, 2006, Fremont Street Nursery spent $312,000 to expand the current building by 1,100 square feet and open our doors to infants, 1 and 2 year olds.
